Books are important beyond all measure for Parents, Teachers, leaders and professionals of every kind, artisans and labourers - reading is for everyone whoever they are and whatever they are doing.
Reading is for all ages
Often we quite unaware that we are learning because we are enjoying the process.Even when we read purely for relaxation and enjoyment, we usually learn something.
It’s equally important to be able to write. It is deplorable that cursive writing on paper is being phased out at schools. We all need to know how to write legibly and express ourselves clearly on paper.
Use a fountain pen.It is the writing instrument of choice.
Word processors with spell checking have made us lazy. The Microsoft Word spell checker prefers American spelling conventions even when you set the language to South African English, while the Libre Office spell checker always uses correct UK (or South African) spelling conventions. Word processors also facilitate editing, while writing a letter or document on paper may necessitate several draft copies being filed in the dust bin. We will however never regret being able to write with a pen on paper. Imagine the benefits of removing the tax on books. Surely the loss incurred by the Receiver of Revenue is very small compared to the huge benefit of making print publications more easily available to libraries and schools. The local book industry would benefit enormously from tax breaks regarding the production and sale of books (including imported books).
You know a book is good when you realize you’ve been reading for hours when you only wanted to read for a few minutes.
“The failure to read good books both enfeebles the vision and strengthens our most fatal tendency — the belief that the here and now is all there is.”Allan Bloom (The Closing of the American Mind)
This is our future unless we become Book Activists
Electronic books have been available for many years. They are more portable, you can take your books anywhere with you so that if you have a few minutes to spare (perhaps in a doctor’s waiting room) you can read a few more pages of your current book. it is possible to keep many thousands of books on a single device. The I-Pad is the preferred device for the classroom. You can download and install Calibre (an excellent free E-Book reader) for your laptop or desktop computer.
Tablets (particularly the I-Pad) are making a big difference to children’s classroom experiences.
