South Africans are very passionate about sports. The most popular sport is Soccer.  Rugby and Cricket are also widely followed.
It isn’t possible to do justice on these pages to all the sports played in South Africa. We don’t do very well in Soccer, but we will try to keep track of our teams. Chess is not a very physical activity, so it’s status as a sport is very controversial. Our women’s teams are doing very well internationally, they deserve more publicity.
The Haka is a traditional war dance originating from the Maori people of New Zealand. It is performed by the All Blacks before every Test match, and it’s purpose is to intimidate their opponents. It’s called Rugby’ because assault and battery’ were already taken

Sevens Rugby
The South African Rugby Sevens team, the BlitzBokke, won the 2016/17 World Series Title. This form of Rugby originated in Melrose, Scotland, in the 1880’s. Rugby Sevens has been included in the Olympics from 2016. Sevens tournaments are known for having a more relaxed atmosphere than 15 a side games.
There is an app available for both men & women’s sevens rugby, download it from the Play Store (iOS and Android) or from the Women’s Sevens page *here*. It is an elite-level women’s competition between rugby nations.

Each team consists of 11 batsmen and 11 fielders, including bowler and wicket keeper. A batsman can be bowled out, caught out, or run out. This consists of a wicket taken. If the batsman hits the ball bowled to the boundary line that is four runs to the batsman. If the batsman hits the ball over the boundary line without touching the ground, that is six runs to the batsman.
The S.A. Women’s Cricket team is known as the Proteas Women’s team. It is one of eight teams competing in the ICC Women’s Championship. They also play ODI and T20 cricket. In fact, in recent years T20 has taken on a more prominent role, almost eliminating Test Cricket from the women’s game altogether. 18 July 2017 Protea women’s team reached the semifinals against England in the women’s cricket World Cup 2017.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the country. The governing body is the South African Football Association. The Premier Soccer League administers the two professional leagues, the S.A. Premier Division and the National First Division. There are women’s teams as well.
Athletics South Africa (ASA) is the umbrella body for all athletic sports types in South Africa. There are many categories which include track and field activities and road running such as marathon running, and also jumping, throwing and walking. The Ancient Olympic Games (from 776 BC) were the start of our current Olympic Games. South Africa is well represented at the Olympics and the Paralympics.
Chess
Some national sporting bodies recognise chess as a sport. It is a two player strategy board game, believed to have originated in India before the 7th century. The rules as we know them were finally standardised in the 19th century. The highest level of skill is Grandmaster. The IBM “Deep Blue” computer was the first machine to beat a reigning world chess champion when it beat Garry Kasporov in 1997. Chess programmes on computers have improved since then. The duration of a game ranges from classical games which can take up to seven hours to less than three minutes for ‘bullet chess’.
