Fireworks
and Pets
Dogs often run away from the noise and are
unable to find their way home again. They are
often run over by cars as they flee in panic.
Animals who are too close to fireworks
explosions often suffer significant burns and eye
damage, and the noise can permanently affect
their sense of hearing.
There are several celebrations that all pets in
South Africa hate. These include Christmas, New
Year, Guy Fawks, Halloween and the Muslim
celebration of Eid.
Fireworks are often used in these celebrations,
and the noise these fireworks make is very
frightening to animals. Dogs in particular
exhibit symptoms of severe stress when they
hear fireworks going off. Fireworks sound
different to your dog than other natural noises
such as thunder.
Using fireworks near animals is inhumane -
please sedate your pets and keep them close to
you when fireworks are being lit up.
Ensure that your pets have indentification,
collar with ID or chips, so that you can more
easily get them back should they run away
during the noisy celebrations.
Report all violations of the municipal by-laws,
particularly the times when fireworks are
allowed to be used in your area.
