It isn’t possible to do justice on these pages to all the sports played in South Africa. We don’t do very well in soccer, but we will try to keep track of our teams. Chess is not a very physical activity, so its status as a sport is very controversial. Our womens teams are doing very well internationally, they deserve more publicity.

The South Africa national rugby union team, commonly known as the Springboks, is governed by the South African Rugby Union. The Springboks play in green and gold jerseys with white shorts, and their emblems are the Springbok and the King Protea. The team has been representing South Africa in international rugby union since 30 July 1891, when they played their first test match against a British Isles touring team.

Athletics South Africa (ASA) is the umbrella body for all athletic sports types in South Africa. There are many categories which include track and field activities and road running such as marathon running, and also jumping, throwing and walking. The Ancient Olympic Games (from 776 BC) were the start of our current Olympic Games. South Africa is well represented at the Olympics and the Paralympics.
Some national sporting bodies recognise chess as a sport. It is a two player strategy board game, believed to have originated in India before the 7th century. The rules as we know them were finally standardised in the 19th century. The highest level of skill is Grandmaster. The IBM “Deep Blue” computer was the first machine to beat a reigning world chess champion when it beat Garry Kasporov in 1997. Chess programmes on computers have improved since then. The duration of a game ranges from classical games which can take up to seven hours to less than three minutes for ‘bullet chess’.
